Admissions Open for Academic Year 2026–27 at Nalanda University

Nalanda University was established by an Act of Parliament in 2010 as an international institution for pursuit of intellectual, philosophical, historical and spiritual studies.. It revived the glory of ancient first residential university of the world founded at Nalanda by one of the Gupta dynasty Emperor Kumargupta in 427 CE, which was flourished for over 800 years. Ancient Nalanda had attracted scholars to its campus from places as distant as China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, and South East Asia. The new university has been built to improve regional understanding  and the appreciation of one another’s heritage and history.. Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurated the University’s Campus at Rajgir, Bihar (close to the site of the ruins of ancient Nalanda) on 19 June, 2024.

 

Academic:   The academic activities were commenced in 2014. The University currently has over 1,200 students, including 637 residential students in post graduate and doctoral programmes. Among these, there are 332 international students, from more than 22 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The University is supported by a robust framework, including ICCR, BIMSTEC and India-Bhutan scholarships.

 

Amenities: The University has evolved into a fully residential international institution.  The new campus is also a ‘Net Zero Green Campus’ and includes over 100 acres of water bodies (Kamal Sagar ponds), an on-grid solar plant, a domestic and drinking water treatment plant and a water recycling plant for reusing wastewater as well as over 100 acres of green cover.  The grand amphitheatre with a capacity of around 2000 spectators is situated amidst the central part of โ€ฏthe Kamal Sagar.  There are specifically designed rounded halls for practical meditation sessions and learning.  The several open-air roundel theatres are used as pleasant spaces for lectures, discussions, enacting or demonstration.  The 300-seater Sushma Swaraj Auditorium and a 100-seater Mini Auditorium are well equipped to host seminars, conferences, lectures of distinguished speakers and cultural programmes. In addition, other amenities like  University Library, Dining hall, Yoga Complex, Outdoor Sports Stadium complex with athletic track, Indoor Sports Stadium complex, well equipped gymnasium are also available.

 

Admission’s Programme: Nalanda University is offering following 2-year postgraduate programme for the Academic Year 2026-27:

M.A. in Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions, Hindu Studies, Historical Studies, World Literature., International Relation & Peace Studies, Archaeology, Hindi, Mathematics, Economics, Philosophy.

  1. Sc. In Ecology and Environment Studies, Mathematics.
